Offers health insurance to the uninsured and dangerous

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The state of New Mexico has begun its first program under federal health care reform.
As of July 1, the state is using federal funds to provide health insurance coverage for high-risk uninsured New Mexico residents.
The state Human Services Department in cooperation with the New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool is contracting with the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to operate a temporary federal high-risk insurance pool program.
It will help people with pre-existing medical conditions who have been uninsured for at least six months.
In addition, low-income people also may qualify for a subsidized premium.
The temporary pool will expire in 2014, when federal law will prohibit health plans from denying insurance coverage for medical reasons.
